Support Settings for Carbon Fiber Nylon: Interface Tips That Pop Off Clean

Supports are the worst part of printing carbon fiber nylon. The part itself comes out clean, then you spend twenty minutes prying support material out of a threaded hole — and it still leaves scars you can't sand away. PA-CF bonds to itself so well that it bonds to its own supports just as happily. Here's how we set up supports for PA-CF on the bench so they pop off clean instead of fighting you.
Why CF Nylon Supports Fuse to the Part
The same layer-to-layer bonding that makes PA-CF parts tough is what welds your supports in place. Nylon also shrinks and curls slightly as it cools, which wedges support material into every overhang. On PLA you can rip supports off and patch the damage with a knife. On carbon nylon, torn surfaces are permanent — broken fins, snapped tabs, and gouged faces.
Interface Settings That Actually Work
Run two or three interface layers with a support z-distance around 0.15 mm, roughly half a layer height. Interface density between 40 and 50 percent gives the overhang a stable bed without making a solid slab. Keep the interface layer height at 0.2 mm or lower — thinner interface layers peel cleaner than fat ones.
Support pattern matters more than most people think. Grid and gyroid pack tight against the part and grab it. Use lines or rectilinear for the interface, and if your slicer supports it, run the interface pattern perpendicular to the overhang direction. Slower support speed helps too: we cap supports at the same speed as the outer wall so the interface doesn't smear into the part.
Same Material, or a Dedicated Support Filament?
Printing supports in the same PA-CF works if your settings are dialed, but it's the hardest case. A dedicated support filament releases far more easily, and so does plain PA12 without carbon fiber. One thing we've confirmed on the bench: PA12-CF is noticeably easier to support than PA6-CF. The PA6 matrix bonds harder and holds onto support material like it's part of the design. If you want clean overhangs without the fight, start with PA12-CF.
