PA12-CF Print Settings: Temps, Drying, and Bed Prep That Actually Work

You bought a spool of PA12-CF because it's tougher and less moisture-hungry than PA6-CF, and now the first print looks like a stringy mess with corners peeling off the plate. Same story we hear every week. The filament isn't the problem — your settings are. PA12-CF prints differently than the nylon you're used to, and once you dial these four things in, it's one of the most forgiving engineering filaments you'll ever run.
Dry It First, or Nothing Else Matters
PA12 absorbs less water than PA6, but that's a trap. People skip drying, the part comes out weak and bubbly, and they blame the spool. Dry every new roll before the first print: 70-80°C for 8-12 hours in a filament dryer. If you dried it last week, dry it again. Nylon is never 'dry enough from yesterday.'
Nozzle and Bed Temps That Actually Work
Run the nozzle at 270-290°C. Different brands sit at different spots in that range, so do a 10°C temperature tower the first time you open a roll — it costs one hour and saves you three. Bed at 80-100°C, and if your printer has a heated chamber, run it at 40-60°C. No chamber? An enclosure still cuts warping dramatically. PA12-CF won't warp as hard as PA6-CF, but it will still warp when the room is cold.
Bed Prep: PA12 Needs Help to Stick
PA12-CF is slicker than it looks. On bare PEI it can peel mid-print. Use a textured PEI sheet, a Cryogrip plate, or a thin coat of Nano Polymer adhesive. A glue stick works in a pinch, but the nano adhesive cleans up easier and doesn't leave residue in the texture. Whatever you use, let the plate cool to under 50°C before you pull the part — PA12 releases on its own when it's cold.
Speed, Fans, and Retraction Tuning
Keep it sensible: 40-60 mm/s for walls, 80-100 mm/s for infill. Part cooling fan at 0-20% on small layers, off for big ones — too much fan causes delamination. Retraction around 1-1.5mm on direct drive, and expect a little stringing even when tuned; it wipes off easily. Calibrate flow at 0.95-1.0 while you're at it, because carbon fiber changes how much plastic actually lands.
