How to Read a Temperature Tower: Picking the Right Print Temp for Carbon Fiber Nylon

You loaded a new spool of carbon fiber nylon, set 280°C because the last spool liked it, and got parts that look fine until you bend one and the layers split like a saltine. Same polymer, different brand, different optimum — every PA-CF behaves a little differently. A temperature tower is how you find the right number in one print instead of ten failed ones.

What a temperature tower actually tells you

A tower prints the same small model at a ladder of temperatures, usually 5–10°C steps from bottom to top. It puts three failure modes on one plate: stringing, surface quality, and layer bonding. If you only check stringing, you'll pick a cold temp that prints clean and then cracks under load — the most common mistake I see in the shop.

How to run a tower on nylon that you can trust

Dry the filament first. A wet tower is worthless because moisture causes the exact stringing you'll blame on temperature. Run it 12 hours at the manufacturer's recommended drying temp before you start.

Slice the tower with your real part settings — same speed, same fan, same layer height. A tower printed at 40 mm/s won't tell you what happens at 150. And print inside an enclosure or heated chamber. Carbon nylons need ambient warmth; without it, the top sections cool differently than the bottom and your results lie to you.

Reading the results

Too cold: matte, rough surface, layer lines you can feel with a fingernail, gaps where walls meet the top surface. Too hot: glossy, stringy, oozing around small details, fine features that blur together. The right zone is usually the lowest temperature that still gives clean bridges and crisp detail.

But with carbon fiber nylon, surface finish is only half the test.

The test everyone skips

After the tower cools, snap or twist each temperature block. Cold blocks break clean between layers. Warmer blocks deform or tear instead of snapping. Pick the lowest block that fails tough, not the one that looks prettiest. That is your print temperature — write it on the spool, because you will forget by next month.

Run a tower on every new brand. Two vendors' “PAHT-CF” can differ by 15°C on the hotend. That is why every product page in our shop lists the settings we actually print with, not the manufacturer's guess.

Grab a spool and calibrate

If you are starting fresh, try a filament with tested settings already worked out, like the TINMORRY PA6-CF or the IEMAI PA12-CF. Both are spools we have run towers on ourselves, and the settings on the page are the ones that passed.
