How Fast Can You Print Carbon Fiber Nylon? Speed Settings That Keep Strength

You crank the speed slider up, the print finishes two hours early, and the part snaps in your hand like a cracker. That's the trade-off nobody warns you about with carbon fiber nylon. Speed isn't free with PA-CF — it quietly costs you layer adhesion, and you don't see the damage until the part is under load.

What Speed Actually Does to Carbon Fiber Nylon

Carbon fiber nylon parts fail along layer lines first. The fibers stiffen the plastic, but they don't weld the layers together — the bond between layers is still pure polymer. Push volumetric flow past what the hotend can melt and you get cold-stacked, under-extruded layers that delaminate under stress. I've seen the same bracket fail at half its rated load when printed at 250 mm/s instead of 80 mm/s. The layer lines looked identical from the outside.

The Speed Numbers I Actually Run

These are the numbers I run daily on TINMORRY PA6-CF with a 0.4 mm hardened nozzle on an enclosed printer:

  • First layer: 30–40 mm/s. Slow squish sets the foundation. Nothing else matters if the first layer lifts.
  • Perimeters: 60–90 mm/s. Small parts with tight corners stay at 60.
  • Infill: 100–120 mm/s is fine — infill carries less structural load than the walls.
  • Travel: up to 300 mm/s, with retraction tuned per spool.
  • Volumetric cap: keep flow under 11–13 mm³/s on a standard all-metal hotend. That number protects you more than the speed slider ever will.

Watch the volumetric flow readout in your slicer, not the speed slider. A 0.4 mm nozzle at 0.2 mm layers and 80 mm/s is already around 6.4 mm³/s — you have headroom, but not nearly as much as the 500 mm/s marketing numbers suggest.

When You Can Push It Faster

PA12-CF is more forgiving than PA6-CF. It takes up less moisture, resists warping on long flat parts, and gives you a wider speed window. If a part is chunky, unloaded, and purely cosmetic, push perimeters to 120 mm/s and move on. If it's a bracket that holds anything real, slow down. Speed is for prototypes; strength is for parts.
