Hot Car or Engine Bay: Which Carbon Fiber Nylon Actually Survives?

You printed a bracket, bolted it into the car, and two months later it's soft or cracked at the bolt hole. Usually the design was fine — the material wasn't. A part that survives a 22°C shop is a different animal once it bakes in a sealed car or sits against a hot engine. Carbon fiber nylon is the usual upgrade, but not all CF nylons are the same material, and picking the wrong one is how the failure happens.
Know the Heat Where the Part Lives
A car isn't one climate. Dashboards and door trim in direct summer sun regularly pass 90°C, and the engine bay is worse — parts near the block, turbo, or exhaust can sit above 100°C after a hot shutdown. PA12-CF has a glass transition around 50°C, so it's fine for trim clips and shaded interior parts but genuinely softens in a hot car. PA6-CF is better, but nylon absorbs water, and a wet PA6 part softens well before its dry rating. Semi-aromatic grades like PPA-CF and PAHT-CF keep their stiffness well past 100°C even when humid — which is why under-hood parts need them.
Oil, Moisture, and Vibration Decide the Rest
Heat isn't the only test. Engine bays are wet, oily, and full of vibration. Nylons resist oils and greases well — automakers use them under the hood for a reason — but standing hot water and long-term coolant contact will soften any of them. For humidity, PA12 is the standout: it drinks far less water than PA6, so PA12-CF parts hold their dimensions in humid shops. PA6-CF absorbs more, but it gives you the toughness and wear resistance that make it the default for parts that take real abuse. The carbon fiber matters too — it cuts creep and flex under sustained load, which plain nylon loses over time.
Match the Grade to the Job
Here's how I actually pick:
- Interior clips, shrouds, and cable guides that stay shaded: PA12-CF. Predictable, moisture-stable, tough enough for anything the cabin throws at it.
- Brackets and mounts that take real abuse but only occasional heat: PA6-CF, like Tinmorry PA6-CF. This is my default for functional-feeling parts that don't live next to the engine.
- Anything near the block, turbo, or exhaust, or in direct sun year-round: step up to a high-temp grade like Creality PPA-CF. It costs more and demands a hotend that reaches 300°C plus a heated chamber, but it's the only one of the three I'd trust there.
Two rules no matter which you pick: dry the spool before you print — wet nylon is weak nylon — and run a hardened nozzle, because carbon fiber eats brass. And don't print safety-critical suspension or brake parts. Fit everything in place, run it hard, and inspect it after real use before you trust it.
