Why Your Carbon Fiber Filament Keeps Clogging (And How to Stop It)

The Print Dies at Hour Two

You are three hours into a PA12-CF part. The first layers look perfect. Then the extruder starts clicking, the nozzle stops pushing plastic, and by the time you look over, the head is dragging through air while the part cools. Clogs are the most common failure I see with carbon fiber nylon, and in almost every case the fix is something you can do before the next print. Here is how I chase down clogs in the shop, in the order they actually happen.

Check Moisture First � Wet Nylon Clogs on Its Own

Nylon is a sponge. A spool that sat out for two days at 50% humidity is already pushing steam through the nozzle. Water flash-boils at melt temperature, forms bubbles, and the plastic stalls in the melt zone. The fix is boring and it works: dry PA-CF at 70-80 C for 8-12 hours, then print straight from a dry box. I keep test spools above 60 C when they are not in the machine. If your filament has been out of the dryer overnight, this is your clog.

Heat Creep and Retraction � The Slow Build

Carbon fiber nylon needs a hot nozzle, 260-300 C depending on the blend. That heat climbs up the heat break, softens the filament above the melt zone, and the cold end jams. The tell: the clog appears mid-print, not at the start, and the extruder motor runs warm. Cut retraction distance (5 mm on a direct drive is too much; 1-2 mm is usually right) and confirm your hotend fan is actually spinning at full speed. Heat creep jams almost always come back until the airflow is fixed.

Carbon Dust and Worn Nozzles

Carbon fiber is abrasive. A brass nozzle starts opening up after a few hundred grams, and an enlarged orifice lets melted plastic pool inside, carbonize, and narrow the exit. Swap to a hardened steel or tungsten nozzle before the brass one fails, and bump the temperature up 5-10 C when you do, since steel conducts heat worse. If you have been printing CF on brass for a while, do not troubleshoot anything else until the nozzle is replaced.

What We Run When We Need Zero Clogs

For production parts we use IEMAI PA12-CF dried to under 0.1% moisture. It is one of the cleanest, most consistent carbon nylons we have tested, and consistency is what keeps the nozzle clear. On our main machine we run a QIDI Plus5, because a full-metal hotend and hardened nozzle remove the two most common clog causes before they start.
