Why Carbon Fiber Nylon Parts Come Out Undersized (And How to Fix It)

You pull a fresh carbon fiber nylon bracket off the bed and it looks flawless — crisp layers, no warp, no stringing. Then you go to bolt it up and the holes don’t line up. Every dimension is a hair small. That isn’t a slicer bug and it isn’t your calipers. That’s shrinkage, and if you print nylon you’ve fought it before.
Why CF Nylon Shrinks
Semi-crystalline nylons like PA6 and PA12 contract as they cool from the melt. The polymer chains pack into tight crystals, so the part pulls inward — more in X/Y than in Z, and more in thick, solid sections than in thin walls. Carbon fiber filler cuts that hard: it doesn’t shrink, and it pins the matrix in place. But it doesn’t zero it out. A 15% CF loading will roughly halve the shrinkage you’d see in unfilled nylon, not eliminate it.
How Much You Should Expect
Plan around real numbers. Unfilled PA6 can move 1–2%. PA6-CF usually lands around 0.8–1.5%, and PA12-CF runs tighter at 0.5–1%. PPA-CF is the most stable of the bunch, often under 0.5%. Your chamber matters just as much as the resin: a warm 50–60°C chamber lets the part cool slowly and evenly, which trims both shrink and warp. The same part on an open-frame machine cools unevenly and shrinks more.
How to Compensate for It
First, print a 20mm calibration cube and actually measure it with calipers — don’t eyeball it. Then apply a uniform scale factor in your slicer: start around 100.8% in X/Y for PA6-CF and tune from your measurements. For holes and mating features, use horizontal hole expansion or run a small tolerance test with the exact bolts you’ll use. And keep the chamber warm through the whole print; slow, even cooling beats any compensation trick you can dial in.
