PETG-CF vs PLA-CF: Which Carbon Fiber Filament Is Worth Your Money?

You've seen the marketing shots: matte black parts that look machined straight off the build plate. Carbon-fiber filament is the fastest way to make your prints look like injection molding. But pick the wrong base material and that pretty part will sag in a hot car or shatter on the first real impact. Here's what running CF filaments on the shop floor for the last year taught us about PETG-CF versus PLA-CF.
What PLA-CF Actually Is (and Where It Fails)
PLA-CF is PLA with chopped carbon fiber mixed in. The fiber gives you a stiff, matte, dimensionally stable part that prints about as easily as plain PLA. It looks incredible. But the base material is still PLA, and PLA softens around 60°C. Leave a PLA-CF bracket on a dashboard in July and it will droop. It's also more brittle than people expect — carbon fiber adds stiffness, not toughness.
Why PETG-CF Earns Its Keep
PETG-CF keeps that machined matte look and stiffness, then adds what PLA-CF can't: heat resistance up to roughly 80°C, real impact toughness, and better layer adhesion. It's the difference between a part that sits on a shelf and a part that holds a load. For brackets, jigs, cable guides, and anything near an engine bay, PETG-CF is the safer call every time.
The Trade-Offs Nobody Mentions
PETG-CF is harder to print than PLA-CF. Expect more stringing, and dry it properly — PETG is hygroscopic, and wet CF filament prints rough and weak. We dry PETG-CF at 65°C for six hours before every run, even from a sealed spool. And no matter which CF you buy, plan on a hardened steel nozzle: carbon fiber chews through brass in a single spool. A 0.6mm nozzle also avoids the clogs that 0.4mm nozzles pick up from fiber clumps.
Which One Should You Buy?
Simple rule from our bench: if the part is decorative, a prototype, or lives indoors, PLA-CF is fine and it prints like a dream. If the part will see heat, sunlight, or real mechanical load, spend the extra few dollars on PETG-CF.
