First-Layer Adhesion: Z-Offset and Squish Settings That Actually Fix It

Your first layer looks like a washboard — or the part peels off the plate halfway through the first outline. You've leveled the bed twice, and it's still wrong. Nine times out of ten, that's not leveling. It's z-offset.
The Bed Is Only Half the Story
Leveling makes the nozzle the same distance from the bed everywhere. Z-offset sets that distance. With carbon fiber nylons like PA6-CF or PA12-CF, the difference between a part that stays put and one that curls up is often 0.02mm — about the width of a human hair.
Too high, and the filament drops as a loose bead with no bite. It looks round, has gaps between lines, and won't stick. Too low, and it squishes flat but the nozzle drags a ridge through it on the second pass, carving the first layer into a rough mess.
Live-Adjust While It Prints
Don't guess at the number. Start a single-layer test — a 50 x 50mm square is plenty — and watch the first few passes. Most printers let you baby-step the z-offset live. Drop it in 0.02mm steps until the lines merge into one flat, slightly glossy surface with no gaps between them.
How to read it: run a fingernail over the surface. Feel ridges? Too high. Surface shiny with invisible lines? Too close. Back it off a hair. A good first layer is flat, has a matte-glossy finish, and releases clean when the print is done.
Match the Bed to the Material
A perfect z-offset won't save a bad surface. Plain glass is the wrong tool for nylon — it doesn't bite. We run a Cryogrip build plate for most CF nylons. The texture holds the part while the bed is hot and releases it as it cools, no glue stick in sight.
For spools that still want to lift — long flat parts in PAHT-CF or PPA-CF, small parts with hardly any contact area — a thin coat of Nano Polymer adhesive on the plate finishes the job. It dries clear, washes off with water, and doesn't drag filament crumbs around like glue sticks do.
